The “Nancy Z” Summer Speaker Series 2014
A community event promoting appreciation for the Sky Island region through science, culture, art and music.
The Speaker Series is dedicated to Sky Island Alliance co-founder, Nancy “Z” Zierenberg, who inspired hundreds of activists and worked tirelessly in all of her efforts to promote the earth first. The goal of the speaker series is to inspire the public appreciation of the sky island region, through culture, art, science and research, music, and more.
All presentations are held at ZUZI! Theater Company, located at the Historic Y Building.
738 N. 5th Ave. Tucson (Parking map). Free parking is available after 5pm.
Tickets are $10 each. Season tickets (6 events) are available for $50 per person.

This season's speaker series topics include northern jaguars, conservation heroes, borderland culture and biodiversity, and a celebration of Wilderness.

Opening Night: “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and A Land Ethic for Our Time”
Our opening night features this highly-acclaimed documentary sharing a view of Aldo Leopold’s influence on today’s conservation movement, followed by a discussion panel with regional conservationists Acasia Berry, Greta Anderson, Janice Przybyl and Steve Marlatt.

"Unseen Geography: Belief and Meaning in the Sonoran Desert Landscape"
Presenter: “Big” Jim Griffith. "Big" Jim will tell the stories behind some of the supernaturally sanctioned links between cultures and places in our desert region.

"A Celebration of Wilderness"
Presenters: Local authors Richard Shelton, Ken Lamberton, and Chris Cokinos, and Mike Quigley of The Wilderness Society. On the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, presenters will share their experiences and inspiration drawn from their time in Arizona Wilderness, as well as ongoing efforts to expand Wilderness designations in the Sonoran Desert and the Sky Islands of Arizona.

Presenter: Ron Pulliam of Borderlands Restoration. Dr. Ron Pulliam will share his current efforts, experiences and future plans to restore the borderlands, improving habitat for butterflies, bats, hummingbirds, and other pollinators and migratory birds. He is the Science Advisor of Borderlands Restoration, a group that seeks to reconnect wildlife, land, and people in the Arizona/Sonora Borderland region by involving people in restoring the ecosystem on which we depend.

Presenters: Pinau Merlin of the UofA Jaguar Monitoring Project, Diana Hadley of the Northern Jaguar Project, and Jessica Moreno of Sky Island Alliance. Representatives of the Northern Jaguar Project, the University of Arizona Jaguar Monitoring Project, and Sky Island Alliance will describe the ongoing projects to study and protect the northern jaguars of Sonora and Arizona, including their complementary research, outreach and advocacy efforts. The talks will be followed by a panel discussion with the audience.

"Biodiversity expeditions in the Sonoran Sky Islands"
Presenters: Tom Van Devender of Sky Island Alliance and photographer Chip Hedgcock.
Dr. Van Devender will share highlights of many years of biological expeditions in the Sky Islands, including new fascinating discoveries from his ongoing project, the Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment. The presentation will feature beautiful images of recent trips showing the diverse landscapes, plants, animals and people of the Sonoran Sky Islands.
